Red Imported Fire Ants cause problems in
a lot of different ways. Human health is a big issue with the number of
stings inflicted at one time. When the fiery sting begins to ease off a
small pustual is left. When these pustuals are scratched there is a chance
of getting a secondary infection. It is the secondary infection that
leaves the scars that most people associate with Fire Ant bites.
When speaking of the risk to human health there is also
the problem that a small part of the population have, a severe allergic reaction
to the toxin. For those few who are allergic to the toxin an encounter
with a Fire Ant mound can be a near death experience. It is important to
carry a bottle of antihistamine and to be able to identify the mounds prior to
coming in contact with them.
Near homes fire ants can be a problem
for pets and children that do not know how to identify mounds. They also
cause problems by nesting near concrete slabs, sidewalks, and driveways.
As they build their mound they remove soil from under the paving creating a weak
spot that is susceptible to cracking.
Fire Ants are also a danger to electronic equipment and
motors. They love getting into equipment and plugging up motors with sand
as they build their nest. Fire ants have also been known to strip the
insulation off wiring causing equipment to short out. Which ever of these
occurs it is a sure bet the repair will be costly.
In
the rural situation Fire Ants can be damaging to unsuspecting livestock.
They also damage some crops by eating the fruit or seeds.
When fire ants are not damaging the crops, the
equipment may be in danger. Most crops are in the ground long enough for
Fire Ants to build very mounds. When the equipment goes through the field
harvesting the crop it may have an unfortunate incounter with one of these large
mounds. The mound may be destroyed, but there may also be costly damage to
the equipment. Not to mention the down time while the equipment is being
repaired.

TopChoice is a granular insecticide that provides unsurpassed control of fire
ants.
Available only through Professionals, TopChoice offers several important
advantages:
• Apply
any time of year:
TopChoice works all year long. Fire ants are most
active when the temperature is cool and when the ground is moist. In hot, dry
weather, deeply embedded ants are not as apt to crawl over or through the
insecticide granules. However, applications made to turf under these conditions
will
be "warehoused" until the ants begin to actively build mounds and
forage on the
surface. And irrigation or rainfall will bring ants to the surface where they
will come
into contact with the active ingredient.
• Long
residual effect:
TopChoice kills existing colonies of fire ants and
prevents new colonies from establishing for up to one year. After its initial
release into
the soil profile, TopChoice binds tightly to the soil creating a lasting
barrier, one that's
not affected by heavy rainfall. Because it acts gradually, TopChoice kills
foraging
workers, but not before they carry the insecticide back to the colony and spread
it to
the queens and other ants.
• Unique
mode of action:
Fipronil (the active ingredient in TopChoice) acts at
the GABA receptors of insects, "switching off" nerve impulses and
causing severe
disruption of the insect's nervous system.
